Papua New Guinea is one of the most culturally diverse countries in the world. This page is a grouped country overview, not a claim that the peoples below form one ethnic group.
The list below records distinct named peoples documented in ethnographic literature for present-day Papua New Guinea. PNG’s own government stresses the country’s extreme social complexity, and the University of Basel’s Historical Atlas of Ethnic and Linguistic Groups in Papua New Guinea cautions that ethnic-group names and boundaries can be fluid, overlapping and historically inconsistent.
For that reason, TRIBE-X keeps each name separate and does not create a people merely because a language with the same name exists. A GREEN — standalone status means that a separate TRIBE-X record has completed the people-specific checks. REVIEW means the inventory label remains useful but is not yet safe to publish as a separate map record. EXCLUDE is used where the label is not appropriate as a standalone people record.
